The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to begin tomorrow, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) promoting the concept of a "New BPL" in recent days.
Changes include redesigned graffiti, a new theme song, and concerts in three cities—Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Notably, renowned Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed in Dhaka, generating excitement.
However, star cricketer Tamim Iqbal, a key member of defending champions Fortune Barishal, has voiced concerns about these ideas. Speaking on the eve of the tournament, Tamim questioned the emphasis on non-cricketing activities.
“To be honest, I don’t see anything new except for the concerts,” Tamim stated. “If we want to truly transform the BPL, we must invest in cricket itself. That’s what matters most. Improving the tournament should take priority over organizing concerts or other side events.”
Reflecting on previous BPL editions, he added, “Concerts have always been part of the event; it’s not a new idea. While they provide entertainment, the main focus must remain on cricket.”
The BPL has faced long-standing issues, including poor pitch conditions and subpar broadcast quality. Tamim stressed the need to address these problems to elevate the league’s standard. He highlighted that the performance of the cricketers would ultimately determine the tournament’s success.
“It’s too early to judge this year’s tournament as it hasn’t started yet,” he said. “But if asked for advice on improving the BPL, my answer is simple: invest in cricket and the tournament itself.”
Tamim also emphasized the importance of providing world-class facilities, such as high-quality pitches, skilled commentators, advanced camera technology, and modern broadcasting tools. “These are responsibilities that fall squarely on the organizers,” he noted.
Nonetheless, Tamim acknowledged that certain elements, like match outcomes, are beyond the organizers’ control. “Whether a game produces 200 runs or ends at 60 depends on the teams and players. The organizers can only create the best possible environment. If they do their part and we perform well on the field, the tournament will be a success.”
