Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised an awareness raising programme for a group of farmers on Thursday to teach them about the right use of compost fertilisers, and to inspire them into boosting the fertiliser’s application on croplands.
The event was held at an office adjacent to the Sadarpur village, Joykolos Union, Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj.
Dr Badrunnesa, chief at the Sunamganj office of Rice Research Institute, was the chief guest at the event. Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Shantiganj upazila unit President Md Nurul Haq, General Secretary Samiul Kabir and Advisers Nazim Uddin and Sajjadur Rahman were also present at the event, among others.
Farmers’ representatives included Abdul Malik, Amir Uddin, and Sabuj Mia.
The discussants said chemical fertilisers erode the fertility of land and harm the environment. Due the growing application of these artificial land nutrients, the number of natural trees, vegetables and fishes are decreasing in the haor areas of Sunamganj and surrounding districts, they noted.
In contrast, compost fertilisers are organic, affordable and beneficial for both the soil and the environment. The speakers urged increasing use of compost fertilisers in farmlands.
