Bashundhara Shuvosangho members organised a cleanliness campaign on top of the Barek Tila hill, a popular tourist site in Sunamganj, on Wednesday.
The campaign sought to raise awareness against the growth of rubbish at Barek Tila, and the consequent loss of its appeal.
The 400-feet hill sits on the bank of Jadukata river and borders India’s Meghalaya state, but is at risk of losing its appeal due to the pollution caused by thousands of tourists, and street hawkers every day.
Golam Sarwar Liton, adviser at Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Tahirpur upazila unit, led his colleagues, local students, social activists, journalists and local residents in the campaign during noon-afternoon on Wednesday.
Social worker Sarwar Ibne Gias said, “A big message in a small act. Many people walked a challenging 7-kilometre path to join this noble initiative. I hope tourists and all concerned will become more aware about protecting and preserving the environment. I express my gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho for hosting such an exemplary program.”
Shuvosangho member Sanika Richil said, “Bashundhara Shuvosangho regularly undertakes various activities in this remote area. We will continue working consistently to protect the environment, provide humanitarian service, support social development, and raise awareness.”
Campaign participant Rexona Nokrek said, “Through good deeds, we want to spread the message of cleanliness, joy, and peace in society.”
Journalists Kamal Hossain and Shawkat Hasan said, “Such positive initiatives by Bashundhara Shuvosangho will inspire the youth. This will help increase awareness among tourists, local traders, and residents.”
Rupom Akhonji, general secretary of Shuvosangho’s Tahirpur upazila unit, said, “We will become even more active in good work. Our aim is to inspire the youth and students through creative initiatives.”
Also present in the drive were—Premita Nokrek, Klanti Teju, Silvina Napak, Chishti, Abdul Hannan, among others.
Organisers hoped that the cleanliness drive by Shuvosangho would help spread awareness in tourism-dependent areas.
