Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Gaibandha district unit organised a discussion and parents’ gathering in Gobindaganj upazila on Wednesday.
The event was held on the premises of Anubhob Autism and Intellectual Disability School in the Bardhon Kuthi area of the municipality.
District Shuvosangho president Humayun Ahmed Biplob presided over the programme.
Headteacher Faridul Islam, teachers Rekha Begum, Rehena Begum, Raihan Ilam, Kamal Chowdhury and Mishu Ahmed, guardians Moslema Begum, Sabina Khatun and Angur Begum, along with members of Bashundhara Shubho Sangho, also addressed the gathering.
Headteacher Faridul Islam said, “Persons with disabilities are not a burden on society. With proper care and opportunities, they too can contribute to the nation and take part in mainstream life.”
He added that the initiative by Bashundhara Shuvosangho on this day is timely, as improving the quality of life for people with disabilities is now a pressing need.
Guardian Moslema Khatun said the responsibility for proper planning for children with disabilities lies not only with families but also with the state. As a mother, she emphasised the importance of ensuring continuous monitoring to support their mental and physical well-being.
Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho later joined the children in various games.
Seventeen-year-old Sohan Mia from the special primary class said he was delighted that the volunteers were playing with them. Students Marufa Khatun, 19, Ritu Khatun, 12, Prema Das, 10, Wasel Pradhan, 19, Hossain Pradhan, 6, and others cheered joyfully, chanting “Shuvosangho, Shuvosangho”.
The event was coordinated by Ahsania Tasnim Snigdha, Ayon Sultan, Ahsan Azim Pradhan Naim and Ahsania Parvez Talukder of the Gaibandha district unit.
The programme concluded with the distribution of chocolates.
