With dengue cases on the rise and an increasing number of patients suffering from critically low platelet counts, the demand for blood has surged, leaving many families struggling to find donors in time.
To address this urgent need, the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Kuakata municipal unit organised an initiative to update the local blood donor database at Pakhimara Bazar in Nilganj Union of Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali.
The daylong programme was held on Thursday (27 Nov), where local businessmen, students, and service holders participated enthusiastically, providing their blood group information.
Inaugurating the programme, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Kuakata municipal unit President Md Saidur Rahman said, “During the dengue crisis, finding a blood donor quickly becomes a major challenge for many families. This updated list will help connect people with nearby donors more easily. We have committed to keeping the database regularly updated.”
Pakhimara Bazar Business Association President Md Aiyub Sharif praised the initiative, saying, “It is truly commendable to turn a marketplace into an active hub for blood donation services. We will continue to provide full support.”
Among those present during the event were Nilganj Union BNP Joint General Secretary Md Sohrab Hossain, Moazzempur Alim Madrasa Lecturer Md Delowar Hossain, Vice President Kazi Saeed, General Secretary Zahidul Islam, Joint General Secretary Zahidul Islam, Publicity Secretary Kawser, and executive member Ibrahim Wahid, among others.
Ibrahim said, “Many people voluntarily provided their blood group information. Several expressed interest in registering as regular donors, which will significantly strengthen our future blood donation activities.”
General Secretary Zahidul Islam added that once the list is completed, it will be shared with local hospitals, pharmacies, and ambulance service providers to ensure quick access when needed.
Vice President Kazi Saeed noted that the initiative aims to guarantee the availability of donors during emergencies.
He also shared future plans, including training sessions for blood donors, awareness campaigns, and an annual recognition programme.
Local residents believe that this updated blood donor database will help develop Pakhimara Bazar into a center of humanitarian service and play a vital role in saving lives during emergencies.
