Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Islamic University (IU) unit organised an awareness discussion and leaflet distribution programme on Wednesday to educate students about ways to minimise damage during earthquakes.
The event was held at the football field adjacent to the Student-Teacher Cultural Centre (TSCC) around noon.
During the discussion, Nazmul Hossain, social welfare secretary of the Shuvosangho’s IU unit and general secretary of Islamic University Press Club, highlighted key safety measures during an earthquake, the importance of preparedness, post-quake response, safe sheltering and personal awareness.
“Earthquakes cannot be prevented, but proper awareness and preparation can significantly reduce damage,” he said.
Students shared opinions on constructing quake-resilient structures, raising awareness at the community level, and ensuring quick response during emergencies.
After the discussion, members of Shuvosangho distributed awareness leaflets at the campus playground, Daina Chattar, Zia Mor and other key points. They also displayed placards bearing safety messages to raise awareness among students.
The event was attended by Abir Hossain, president of the IU Press Club; Rakib Rifat, general secretary of the Journalists’ Association; members of Shuvosangho; students from different departments; and well-wishers of the organisation.
Irfan Ullah, a student of the Department of Al-Fiqh and Law, said the discussion helped him understand how to stay safe during earthquakes. “Earthquakes are natural disasters. We cannot stop them, but we can learn how to protect ourselves. This initiative is timely and necessary,” he said.
Munjurul Islam Nahid, president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s IU unit, said the recent earthquake incidents caused anxiety among students. “This programme aims to reduce fear and promote awareness. Our message is simple—don’t panic, stay aware,” he added.
