Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion session and musical event in Mymensingh’s Gauripur upazila on Friday to mark the death anniversary of Fakir Lalon Shah.
The event took place in the hall of the local reader association Swajan Samabesh on Hatem Ali Road.
The programme began with a one-minute silence in memory of Ekushey Padak-winning artist Farida Parveen.
Senior member of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Gauripur upazila unit Obaidur Rahman presided over the discussion, while its president Shankar Ghosh Pilu, General Secretary Md Harun Mia, Daily Jugantor Gauripur correspondent Raich Uddin Raich, Executive Director of Gauripur Ganapathagar Amirul Momenin, adviser Faruk Ahmad, and Gauripur Women’s Degree College lecturer and poet Selim Al Raj spoke at the event.
Speakers emphasised Fakir Lalon’s philosophy, humanitarian thoughts, and contributions to social reform. They said Lalon’s songs represent not just music but a deep vision of humanity.
President Shankar Ghosh Pilu said, “Lalon’s music teaches us humanity, love, and tolerance. This distinguished saint is a shining example in the world of music. We should draw inspiration from his songs and philosophy.”
General Secretary Harun Mia said, “Fakir Lalon was not only a Baul singer but also a social reformer, philosopher, and humanitarian. His philosophy, ‘Worship humanity, and you will become a golden human’, remains relevant today. Our aim at Shuvosangho is to spread this message of humanity.”
The second segment of the programme featured an enchanting Lalon musical performance. Artists from Chand’s Hat and Gauripur Agradoot branch, including Gopa Das, Anamika Sarkar, Chaina Rani Sarkar, Suchi Sarkar, and Tithi Sarkar, performed the songs. Tabla accompaniment was provided by Swapnan Sarkar, with dotara played by Amirul Momenin.
Other attendees included Bashundhara Shuvosangho members Rakibul Islam Rakib, Mehedi Hasan Roni, Asif Talukdar, Jahangir Islam Sabbir, Joy Acharya, Sheikh Mohammad Sourav, Abdus Salam, Tasaddul Karim, Gauripur Multimedia Journalists Forum’s Suman Ahmed, Gauripur Blood Donation Foundation President Ashiqur Rahman Rajib, and Ramzanur Ahmed Nazim.
