The wooden bridge over the canal beside Dr. Prashanta Roy’s residence, which connects the villages of Rahutpara and Kathira in Gaila Union under Agailjhara Upazila of Barishal district, had remained damaged for a long time. Consequently, residents of around ten surrounding villages faced serious difficulties in maintaining communication with the Upazila Sadar.
Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, the social organisation of the country’s leading industrial group Bashundhara Group, decided to repair this important bridge. Recently, the volunteers of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, together with local youths, reconstructed the bridge using new wooden planks.
At the inauguration event, journalist SM Omar Ali Sani, adviser of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Agailjhara unit, said: “Bashundhara Shuvosangho always stands beside people for good causes. Following that spirit, our members have repaired the wooden bridge over the Rahutpara-Kathira canal with new wood. For a long time, students and residents of this area had been suffering due to the damaged bridge, having to travel nearly five kilometers around to reach their destinations. With this repair, their suffering has now been mitigated.”
Local residents freedom fighter Kalipada Roy and tax lawyer Samiran Roy said: “This wooden bridge over the Rahutpara-Kathira canal is the only means of communication for around ten villages, serving several thousand people. There is also the house of a specialist doctor, Dr. Prashanta Roy, nearby, where many patients come daily to receive treatment. The area also has a mission school and the Sri Sri Hari Thakur temple. There is no other bridge within five kilometers to the east or west. We are deeply grateful to Bashundhara Shuvosangho Agailjhara unit members for repairing the bridge and easing the hardship of local people. We hope the organisation continues its humanitarian work, and we pledge to stay with Bashundhara Shuvosangho in all good initiatives.”
At the bridge’s reopening ceremony, journalist SM Omar Ali Sani, adviser of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Agailjhara unit; Md Saiful Mridha, president of Upazila Reporters Unity; tax lawyer Samiran Roy, vice-president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Agailjhara unit; Md Shaha Alom Radhi; Lalita Sarkar, cultural affairs secretary; Nilima Kar, women affairs secretary; Engineer Richard Biswas; journalists Ahad Talukder, Amir Hamza, Shanta Halder, and Jillian Biswas, among others, were present.
