Bashundhara Shuvosangha Jagannath University unit organised a poster exhibition to raise awareness about the harmful effects of staying up late and irregular sleep patterns on Tuesday.
The event took place at 11:00 am in front of the Shaheed Sajid Academic Building.
The students designed the posters highlighting the causes and consequences of irregular sleep, including its social and psychological impacts. It sarcastically portrayed issues such as Old Dhaka’s noise pollution, digital addiction and the negative outcomes of late-night habits.
The quotes displayed on those posters included, “Proper sleep ensures good health,” “Dark circles under the eyes — the new fashion of modernity,” “The glow of mobile screens is momentary, but the glow of sleep lasts a lifetime,” “Lack of sleep makes your mood like Old Dhaka’s traffic — jammed all day,” and "Sleep is not a subject in the syllabus for students living in Old Dhaka."
Jannatun Naim, a student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said “Old Dhaka’s dense environment and constant noise — from hawkers, vehicles and roadwork — disrupt sleep. We want students to be aware of this,” she said.
Anthropology student Jannatul Mawa Lisha expressed that excessive mobile phone use is disrupting students’ sleep routines. “If this problem continues, it will severely affect their mental health,” she warned.
Another student, Toufiq Hasan, admitted many students use study pressure as excuse to stay up at night. “In reality, it reduces our ability to learn and focus in class. I believe awareness can help us overcome this habit,” he said.
Student Tanvir Anjum added that the tendency to stay up late is increasing among people especially students. “Irregular sleep leads to stress and physical weakness. Such exhibitions should also raise awareness among the general public,” he said.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho JnU unit president Md Junaet Sheikh said, “We want students to understand that without adequate sleep, education, productivity and mental health suffer. Awareness is the first step to change.”
Members of Shuvosangha, including Ishmam, Ali Kazi, Tania, Mahid, Suhail, Amir Hamza, Samiul, Khadija, Asha Moni, Lima, Maya, Abdullah, Masud, Reshmi, Afia, Munzir, Munir, Golam Mawla, Jihad and Hira, were present.
