Bashundhara Shuvosangho Meherpur district unit, held a reading circle at the green courtyard of Meherpur Government College to promote reading habits among students.
Adviser and Kaler Kantho correspondent Yadul Momin, along with organising secretary Anik Hasan, recited poems from Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali and discussed their themes.
District president Rafiqul Alam Bakul chaired the session, which general secretary Nafiul Islam conducted. Health and human resource secretary Abdullah Al Noman, cultural secretary Ulmatun Nesha Purnima, and executive member Suraiya Akter Happy joined the event.
Students Smriti Kona, Jeba Rahman, Urmila Ahmed, Alin, Anny Akter, Samia Khatun, Moli Akter, Airin Parvin, Golapi Akter, Asha Sadia, Disha Islam, Bipul Hossain, and Nahid Hossain recited verses from Gitanjali.
Yadul Momin reminded participants that social media consumes much of their valuable time. He said, “If we dedicate part of our day to reading, we will reap lifelong benefits. Great thinkers and successful people always allocate time for books. We too must nurture this habit to expand our knowledge.”
President Rafiqul Alam Bakul reflected on his childhood, when reading books was the main pastime before the arrival of social media. He urged students to put aside their phones for a while each day and focus on books, saying that reading enhances mental growth and social awareness.
At the close of the programme, organisers encouraged students to cultivate a regular reading habit and resolved to host at least one reading circle every month.
