Bashundhara Shuvosangho has organised an awareness meeting in Abhoynagar, Jashore, to prevent child marriage and dowry.
The event, held on Sunday morning at Nowapara Shankarpasha Government Secondary School, brought together students from grades 9 and 10.
The meeting was presided over by Syed Sowaheb Imtiaz Yad, president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Abhoynagar Upazila unit.
The school’s principal, Shahidul Islam, attended as the chief guest, while assistant teachers SM Faruk Ahmed and Nazmunnahar Suma, Shuvosangho Adviser and Kaler Kantho Correspondent Syed Zahid Masud Taj, Hafiz Naimul Hasan Jony, and guardian GM Bacchu were present as special guests.
Students Taufiqul Islam, Arghya Biswas, Anas Ibn Zia (grade 10), and Dola Mondol and Sidratul Muntaha Ikra (grade 9) also delivered speeches.
In his remarks, Principal Shahidul Islam said, “Child marriage has become a social scourge, destroying the futures of many young girls. Dowry is an inhumane practice that degrades people and deepens financial inequality. We must unite to combat these problems and report incidents to the authorities immediately.”
Grade 10 student Taufiqul Islam emphasised the need for greater awareness campaigns in rural areas and strict legal action against those involved in child marriage to set an example.
Grade 9 student Sidratul Muntaha Ikra called dowry “a social disgrace” and noted that it fuels child abuse, domestic violence, deaths, divorce, and family conflict.
Syed Sowaheb Imtiaz Yad said that poverty and insecurity are driving child marriage.
“That is why Shuvosangho is working to raise awareness not only among the public but also among students. With collective effort, we can end both child marriage and dowry. Our initiatives in this regard will continue,” he added.
Other attendees included Shuvosangho’s Vice Presidents Azgar Ali and Rajoy Rabbi, Treasurer Akib Hossain Galib, Organising Secretary Matin Gazi, and members Asjad Isnad and Hasan Masud.
