Bashundhara Shuvosangho Manikganj District unit organised an awareness campaign titled “Dengue Prevention Measures” at Manikganj Government Model School on Thursday.
The event was presided over by Md Hasan Shikder, president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, Manikganj District, and conducted by General Secretary Mir Naimur Islam Plabon.
The event featured guest speakers including Kashinath Sarker, adviser of the Manikganj District branch of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, and Nuru Miah, the assistant head teacher at Manikganj Model High School.
Also present in the meeting were Atiqur Rahman Ashiq, office secretary of the District Branch; committee members Tahmina Afrin Mohona, Tasnim Islam Khan Roja, Maimuna Akhter; and others.
Speakers said, “Aedes mosquitoes usually breed in clean, still water. In particular, they lay eggs in containers in and around the house such as flower pots, unused tyres, buckets, coconut shells, and other water-collecting objects. Rooftops, gardens, or other places where water is stored also provide suitable environments for their breeding.”
They further said, “Dengue fever returns as a familiar threat. Caused by a virus transmitted through Aedes mosquitoes, this illness may begin as a common fever but can become life-threatening in some cases.”
“Therefore, it is essential to stay alert in time. Before going to school, children should use mosquito repellent cream,” they further said.
The speakers again said, “The home and surrounding areas must be kept clean to prevent mosquito breeding in still water. Car owners should ensure mosquitoes do not enter their vehicles. When children go out to play, mosquito repellent should be applied, and parents should work together to keep playgrounds clean.”
Regarding preventing the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, speakers added, “Containers inside and around the house—such as flower pots, old buckets, coconut shells, unused tyres, etc.—must be emptied of rainwater.”
They again said, “still water should be drained and kept clean. Mosquito spray can be used inside the house and surrounding areas. Nets can be installed on doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering. Mosquito nets should be used while sleeping during the day.”
They also warned, “Since Aedes mosquitoes usually bite during daylight hours, it is better to wear clothing that covers the body. As they breed in still water, no water should be allowed to accumulate nearby. Public awareness must be increased, and people should be provided with necessary information and support for Aedes mosquito control.”
Md Hasan Shikder, president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Manikganj District Chapter, said, “There is no need to fear dengue fever. Instead, correct knowledge, alertness, and awareness can protect us. That is why such awareness initiatives have been organised by Bashundhara Shuvosangho.”
General Secretary Mir Naimur Islam Plabon added, “Let us become aware ourselves and share the responsibility of keeping our families and communities safe."
