Two speech-impaired siblings in Dinajpur's Hili have received food assistance from Bashundhara Shuvosangho, bringing their struggling family to tears.
The aid was handed over on Wednesday around 11:30 am at Chandipur village in Ward-1 of Hakimpur upazila.
Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Hakimpur unit delivered the food items to the mother of Selim Hossain and Rumana Khatun, who are both speech-impaired.
Present during the distribution were Golam Mostafizar Rahman Milon, Hili correspondent of Daily Kaler Kantho and adviser of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Hakimpur upazila unit; vice-president Nahid; Mujahid Pradhan Masum; general secretary Mosammat Khadija Akhter Jui; joint-organizing secretary Riti Rani Sutradhar; and women's affairs secretary Umme Habiba Anju.
“My husband is too old to work, and I’ve gone door to door seeking help to feed my disabled son and daughter properly. But we got nothing,” said the children’s mother, Mosammat Khaleda Begum.
“We have no land. We rent a small room for Tk400 a month. I often stay awake at night, wondering what will happen to my children after we die. Today, after so long, my children will be able to eat properly. I pray for those who helped us,” she said, breaking into tears.
The children’s father, Shahajan Ali, echoed her concerns.
“I have no land. I try to earn Tk200–400 a day through matchmaking, and that barely covers our meals. I couldn’t buy anything for my children even during Eid,” he said.
“I’ve pleaded with many for a small shelter for my children but received no support. If someone could help us build a house, I could die in peace, knowing my children have a place of their own.”
Forhad Hossain, who informed Bashundhara Shuvosangho about the family’s plight, said: “I reached out to senior vice-president Mustakin Hossain, and he assured me food aid would be arranged. On Tuesday night, he confirmed that support would be provided. I never imagined so many food items would be given.”
He expressed gratitude to the organisation, saying, “May Allah keep everyone in the Bashundhara family well for standing beside such a helpless family.”
