Notably, Alexander Castle, popularly known as Lohar Kutir, is one of the most iconic heritage sites in Mymensingh. According to government records, this aesthetically pleasing building was constructed in 1879 with iron and wood. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, it hosted many eminent personalities, including Rabindranath Tagore and Lord Curzon.
Due to the lack of renovation over the years, the building is now on the verge of ruin. Many parts of the structure have already been damaged, and valuable items have been stolen. Though the building was brought under the Department of Archaeology in 2018, no development or restoration work has been undertaken till date.
Reportedly, Maharaja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury, the zamindar of Muktagacha, built the two-storey structure to commemorate the Jubilee festival in the city.
