A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar late at night, with tremors also felt in parts of Bangladesh, particularly in Chattogram, reports Daily Sun.
The earthquake occurred at 1:36am Bangladesh time on Sunday. The quake originated at a depth of around 10 kilometers beneath the surface. Its preliminary epicenter was located at 20.46 degrees north latitude and 93.94 degrees east longitude, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
Citing Xinhua News Agency, the report also claims that the earthquake originated near the Sidoktaya area of Myanmar. The United States Geological Survey said the epicenter was located about 11 kilometers from Sidoktaya.
No casualties or major damage were immediately reported. However, the sudden tremor during the late hours caused panic among residents.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, mild tremors were also felt in several northern districts of Bangladesh, including Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Dinajpur and Mymensingh. The quake, which struck around 3:10pm, did not cause any major damage.
India’s National Center for Seismology measured Saturday’s quake at 4.5 magnitude, while the USGS recorded it at 4.4. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicenter was located in the Bilasipara area of Assam, India. The agency said the tremors were more strongly felt in bordering districts due to the quake’s shallow depth.
