A 13-kilometre traffic jam formed on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in the Gazaria section of Munshiganj, causing severe disruption to commuters since early Wednesday.
The congestion began around 6:00 am following a problem on the Langalband Bridge in neighbouring Narayanganj, officials said.
On the ground, a long tailback stretched along the Dhaka-bound lanes across a 13-km section. Increased pressure of vehicles slowed movement significantly, leaving passengers stranded for hours and causing acute suffering, particularly for office-bound commuters.
Long lines of vehicles were seen from the Jamaldi Meghna Bridge area to Bhaberchar. Buses and freight trucks were moving slowly, with the congestion continuing as of 10:00 am.
Truck driver Shahabuddin said he had been stuck in traffic from Daudkandi for more than an hour.
A commuter, Roni Mia from Tengarchar village, said the sudden congestion had made him late for work. “I don’t understand why such traffic jams occur on a highway like this,” he said.
Officials from the Highway Police said the congestion originated near Langalband Bridge and spread into Gazaria. Teams were deployed to control traffic, prevent wrong-way driving, and ease the gridlock as quickly as possible.
