Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan emphasized that agriculture and farmers remain the primary driving force of the country’s economy, reports BSS.
“Agriculture and farmers are the backbone of our economy,” he said while addressing a colorful rally organized by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Tuesday morning, marking Pohela Boishakh and the Bengali New Year 1433.
Extending greetings to journalists and citizens, the minister said the government, elected through the people’s mandate under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, has begun rebuilding the country with renewed energy.
Highlighting the origins of the Bengali calendar, he noted that it was introduced during the Mughal era to coordinate agricultural production and revenue collection. Continuing that tradition, the government has chosen Pohela Boishakh to officially launch the ‘Farmer Card’ distribution program this year.
He added that the Prime Minister inaugurated the program in Tangail, stressing that economic restructuring and achieving self-reliance are key priorities of the government. “Our guiding principle is ‘Bangladesh First,’” he said.
Referring to the peaceful nationwide celebrations, the minister said the festive atmosphere reflects a conducive environment for democratic practices. He expressed hope that this positive environment would continue for the country’s prosperity.
The event was presided over by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, while Prime Minister’s speechwriter Mahfuzur Rahman attended as special guest.
In his remarks, Abu Saleh Akon said this year’s Pohela Boishakh is being celebrated in a renewed atmosphere shaped by a new government and democratic spirit.
DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, who hosted the program, noted greater public participation compared to previous years and expressed satisfaction over the peaceful celebrations.
Among others present were BSS Managing Editor Fazlul Haque, Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfikar Hasan (Hasan Shiplu), Md. Sujauddaula (Sujan Mahmud), Shahadat Hossain Swadhin, and journalists from various media outlets.
After the program, the minister inaugurated a traditional puppet dance exhibition organized by DRU. The event concluded with a rally, discussion session, and the presentation of mementos to the guests.
