DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali stressed as the former OC Shah Alam’s who fled from prison remains traceless.
The Commissioner said that if police were meant to release him then they might release him in Kushtia, not after bringing him to Dhaka. However, two concerned officials were dismissed over negligence to their duty.
He made the statement on Tuesday while sharing views with the newly elected executive body of Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).
OC Shah Alam, 42, was arrested in connection with a murder case during the anti-discrimination student movement, and law enforcement has struggled to locate him since his escape.
More than ten days after escaping police custody, Shah Alam, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station, remains on the loose.
DMP Commissioner said: “We arrested him from Kushtia. After he escaped, the question arose whether the police had released him. Police did not arrest him to release.”
“If we had released him, there was no need to catch him from Kushtia. The police could have released him there,” he continued, adding: “The fact is that the police members have shown sympathy.”
“In lieu of putting him in jail, he was kept in a police officer's room,” Sazzat continued. If he had been in jail, he might not have been able to escape. He was kept in the charge of a sub-inspector. He might have become careless there. Taking the advantage the OC managed to escape.
He also said that police is trying to arrest the former OC. “I think that he might have escaped to India, he is not in the country anymore,” the high official furthered.
