The interim government has ordered for the removal of councillors in all the 12 cities and 323 municipalities across the country, reports Daily Sun.
On 19 August, the interim government, formed in the wake of the downfall of Awami League regime in a popular uprising, removed mayors of the city corporations and municipalities to rid the local administration of autocratic influence.
Two separated notifications were issued Thursday night to remove the councillors in the designated areas with immediate effect.
Mohammad Shamsul Islam, deputy secretary of the City Corporation-1 wing of the local government and cooperative ministry, signed the notification regarding the removal of city corporation councillors.
On the other hand, Mahbub Alam, deputy secretary of the Paurashava-1 wing of the same ministry, signed the notification for the removal of municipality councillors.
While the interim government appointed administrators to execute the duties of mayors, it was not clear if anyone would replace the councillors in the cities and municipalities.
