Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) has stood by 46 poor ophthalmic patients by conducting cataract surgeries for free.
Being an ophthalmic venture of the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, BEHRI arranged the surgeries in association with Vision Care Foundation and Chapainawabganj-based Nobojagoron Protibondi Odikar Songstha on Thursday, reports Daily Sun.
Under the supervision of BEHRI founding director Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed, Dr Rubina Akter, phaco, vitreo retina specialist & surgeon of the hospital, conducted the operations.
Talking to journalists, Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed said “We had arranged a free eye camp at Chapainawabganj on November 22 last year and provided treatment to around 850 distressed patients. Of them, 230 patients were selected for ophthalmic surgeries. A total of 104 patients received surgeries in two batches. The 46 recipients of surgeries comprising 28 males and 18 females belong to the third batch. On Friday, we will send them back home. Bashundhara Eye Hospital is the only organisation in the country to provide free services.”
Faiza Rahman, public relations officer of BEHRI, said the hospital has been providing treatments and surgeries to the poor and destitute for years.
Nearly 1,900 distressed patients from across the country have received surgeries from Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute so far.
Earlier on February 2, a total 55 poor patients received ophthalmic operations from the BEHRI free of charge. They hailed from Barura upazila of Cumilla.
