Police and BNP activists locked into a clash in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan central office Wednesday afternoon amid tension over BNP’s December 10 rally.
Eyewitnesses said when BNP leaders and activists took a position in front of the party office around 3 pm and started chanting slogans police asked them to leave the place.
At one stage of altercation over the issue, police lobbed tear gas shells and charged batons to disperse them, reports UNB.
BNP activists also pelted brick chips towards the law enforcers, triggering the clash that left an unspecified number of people injured.
Contacted, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “When our leaders and activists gathered there to know about Saturday’s rally police attacked them, leaving many injured.”
Biplab Sarkar, joint commissioner (operation) of DMP headquarters, said police took action for ensuring the security of people.
As per the directive of the DMP commissioner police are doing whatever is needed to maintain law and order, he added.
