Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition is leading as India counts votes, reports Al Jazeera.
The BJP-led NDA alliance is currently ahead in 281 seats while the Congress coalition defies exit polls by leading in 224.
The BJP on its own is leading in 236 seats the Congress on 99. A party or coalition needs 272 seats to form the government.
The Indian Election Commission said that a record-breaking 642 million voters cast their ballots in the staggered election as it dismissed opposition concerns over how the votes would be counted.
