A vessel carrying 61,000 metric tons of wheat from the United States has arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, marking another significant step in Bangladesh’s ongoing food import programme.

The ship, MV MP Ultramax 2, reached the port on Wednesday under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement signed between the United States and the Government of Bangladesh.

The shipment is part of cash purchase contract G to G-03 under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries.

According to officials, earlier shipments under the same agreement included 58,457 metric tons in the first consignment and 62,150 metric tons in the second, both of which have already arrived in the country.

Testing of wheat samples from the newly arrived shipment has already begun, and authorities have taken steps to ensure quick unloading.

Of the total cargo, 29,450 metric tons will be unloaded at Chattogram, while the remaining 31,550 metric tons will be transported and discharged at Mongla Port.

Bangladesh has already completed wheat imports under earlier agreements G to G-01 and G to G-02. Under these deals, a total of 467,884 metric tons of wheat—237,845 metric tons under G to G-01 and 230,039 metric tons under G to G-02—have been received.

Officials say the country’s annual wheat demand stands at around 7 million metric tons, while domestic production is approximately 1 million metric tons. The remaining demand is met through imports by both government and private sectors.

The latest shipment is expected to help stabilize the country’s food supply amid growing demand.
