Tesla’s sales in Germany dropped sharply in February, continuing a downward trend after Elon Musk publicly endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) during the country’s recent election campaign.
Official data released Wednesday by the KBA federal transport authority showed just 1,429 Tesla vehicles were registered last month, a 76 percent decline from the same period last year. This followed a nearly 60 percent drop in January, bringing Tesla’s total sales decline in Germany to 70 percent for the first two months of 2025.
Musk’s intervention in German politics saw him use his social media platform X to declare that only the AfD could “save Germany.” The party went on to secure almost 21 percent of the vote in the February 23 national elections, its best-ever result. However, Germany’s mainstream parties continue to isolate the AfD, refusing to cooperate with the far right.
Tesla’s slump contrasts with a broader rebound in the German electric vehicle market. While overall new car registrations fell 6.4 percent in February, sales of battery-powered vehicles rose by 31 percent year-on-year, with around 36,000 new registrations.
Germany’s electric vehicle sector has struggled since the government ended key subsidy programs, contributing to weaker demand. Yet, Tesla’s steep decline suggests additional factors may be at play, including consumer reaction to Musk’s political stance.
