Advisor to the ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has said joint efforts of various organizations are needed to resolve waterlogging in Chattogram.
He said this while inaugurating the Mahesh Canal excavation program adjacent to Thanda Mia Bridge, Dial Bridge and Bridge No. 9 in Abidar Para, South Agrabad of the city on Saturday.
At that time, Chattogram City mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, divisional commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin, CDA chairman Engineer Nurul Karim, Chattogram deputy commissioner Farida Khanam, CCC chief executive officer Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam, chief cleaning officer commander Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, CDA canal excavation project director Lieutenant Colonel Ferdous Ahmed were also present. After the inauguration, various important points including Birja Canal and East Gate of Chattogram Medical College were inspected under the leadership of the advisor.
The advisor said that the waterlogging may not be completely over by next May, but there will be significant improvement. The Water Development Board, WASA, City Corporation and all related organizations will work together to solve this problem.
Regarding corruption in the waterlogging relief project, he said, “There have been allegations of irregularities in previous projects. The Anti-Corruption Commission will look into these issues. Our job is to cooperate with the City Corporation and other organizations in waterlogging relief.”
He also said that the desired results have not been obtained even after spending thousands of crores of taka. Therefore, visible improvement must be ensured first. If success is proven, there will be no problem in obtaining the necessary funding.
