Saida Shinichi, the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, visited the Metro Rail Exhibition and Information Center (MEIC) in Dhaka on Tuesday.
During his visit, he paid heartfelt tribute to the victims of the 2016 Holey Artisan attack, laying flowers at the monument erected in their honour.
The tragic attack claimed 22 lives including seven Japanese nationals in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on July 1, 2016.
These Japanese nationals were among those who had worked on planning the Dhaka Metro, specifically the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1 and the northern section of Line 5.
In memory of their dedication, a monument was established at MEIC in June 2022 by the consulting firms associated with the Japanese victims and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
As a symbol of the lasting and fruitful relationship between Japan and Bangladesh, the MRT system now plays a vital role in improving urban transportation in Bangladesh.
During the solemn ceremony, Ambassador Saida expressed his deep respect for the victims' commitment and pledged to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations.
