Tributes began pouring in following Mahmudullah Riyad's announcement of his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday (March 12).
Leading the charge were the four members of Bangladesh's framed 'fab five' — Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza — who shared heartfelt messages reflecting on their shared journey and Mahmudullah’s immense contribution to the game.
Shakib, his long-time teammate and partner in some of the finest partnerships for Bangladesh, was quick to acknowledge Mahmudullah's immense contribution to the game.
"Riyad Bhai, it's been a privilege playing by your side and learning from you along the way. You've led by example, both on and off the field, and your records speak for themselves. Our nation is indebted to you for your dedication, resilience, and love for the game and country," Shakib shared on his Facebook, admiration clear in his words.
"May Allah continue to bless you and your family and guide you in your new journey," he added, sending his best wishes for Mahmudullah's next chapter.
Mushfiqur Rahim, who also retired from ODI cricket last week, reflected on their time together on the field.
"It has truly been an honor to share the field with you all these years. Thank you for your guidance and the countless memories we’ve made together. I am incredibly proud of all you’ve achieved for the nation. MashaAllah, enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Riyad bhai," Mushfiqur said, highlighting not only Mahmudullah's on-field achievements but also his invaluable mentorship and camaraderie.
Tamim Iqbal, the dashing opener and a key member of the team, expressed his gratitude, acknowledging Mahmudullah's role as one of the cornerstones of Bangladesh cricket.
"You have been one of the pillars to Bangladesh cricket and an inspiration to a lot of us on and off the field," Tamim posted on his social media.
"I will cherish the memories gathered in the dressing rooms we shared. Thank you for your contribution to the cricket of the country and all the best for the upcoming days…” Tamim’s words reflected the deep respect and admiration the team held for Mahmudullah.
Former captain Mashrafe said Mahmudullah as a cricketer is much higher than just the numbers.
"The numbers next to your name are just figures, but beyond those boundaries, you are much higher in our eyes," Mashrafe said in his Facebook post.
"We know how much the team needed you and how seamlessly you became a part of that need. So many memories, both on and off the field, with you! Our time has been filled with countless moments of joy and disappointment mixed together!"
Mashrafe recalled Mahmudullah’s iconic centuries in Adelaide and Cardiff, highlighting his role in making history as Bangladesh's first centurion in the World Cup.
"As Bangladesh's first centurion in the World Cup, no one can take away this achievement from you," he added. "However, I hope many others will surpass your record of four centuries in international cricket, inspired by you as their role model. The way you have showcased your best on the big stage will be the path that generations to come will follow. May you enjoy the remaining days of your domestic cricket career, and may your retirement life be filled with happiness!"
Towhid Hridoy, however, said Mahmudullah’s nickname was ‘pain-killer’ among his friend circle.
“Thank you, Mahmudullah Riyad bhai, for every brilliant moment I witnessed sitting in front of the TV as a child. While everyone calls you the "silent killer," in our friend circle, your name was "pain-killer." There have been many matches where we received a much-needed relief in the final moments, a gift from you,” Hridoy remarked.
Mahmudullah had already stepped away from Test cricket in July 2021 after a memorable farewell match against Zimbabwe, where he scored an unbeaten 150 in his 50th Test. He retired from T20Is in October last year, announcing his decision during Bangladesh’s tour of India.
The all-rounder leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having represented Bangladesh in 239 ODIs, 50 Tests, and 141 T20Is. His contributions, especially in white-ball cricket, will be remembered as a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s rise on the international stage.
