The Central Members' Conference of the Islami Chhatra Shibir started at 8am on Tuesday morning at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital, reports The Business Standard.
Members of the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from across the country are attending the conference to elect the next leaders of the central committee.
The conference was inaugurated by Moslem Uddin, the father of Aly Rayhan who was killed during the July uprising and the organisational secretary of Shibir's Rajshahi city unit.
Along with families of July martyrs, families of Shibir members who were victims of enforced disappearances during the Awami League regime were on stage during the inauguration ceremony.
“We are holding this conference at a time when the country's people are dreaming of rebuilding the state anew. The interim government is working to completely overhaul the education system, judiciary, administration, health sector, and economy, all of which collapsed over the past 16 years due to fascism,” said Shibir President Md Manjurul Islam in his opening speech.
“We call for reforms in the education system to prevent the rise of fascism and for the prosecution of dictatorial allies lurking within the administration,” he added.
Shibir's central publicity secretary Sadek Abdullah said only the highest-level members of the organisation and former central leaders are attending the conference.
Abdur Rahman, the father of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute student and July uprising martyr Osman Patwary, said, “Seven bullets were found inside Osman's stomach, and many more had entered and exited his body.”
“Political parties are dividing the martyrs among themselves. Martyrs are the assets of the country. Please do not divide them,” he pleaded.
He also expressed his frustration, saying, “The murderers are still roaming openly. The administration is not bringing them to justice.”
