Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali admitted the city's traffic mismanagement, calling it "indisciplined." He appealed to residents for cooperation in restoring order to the roads. His comments were made during a press briefing at the DMP Media Center on Monday.
Apologizing for the police's heavy-handed response during the recent student-led uprising, Sajjat stated that the police are adopting a new approach to service. He highlighted the increased activity of the Detective Branch in combating snatching and emphasized that policing will now involve feedback from the public.
On traffic issues, the DMP Commissioner noted that Dhaka’s traffic system is currently in disarray but assured that efforts are underway to restore discipline. He stressed that public cooperation is essential to maintaining order.
Sajjat also called on parents to consider renting homes near schools and colleges to reduce traffic congestion and urged citizens to limit the use of private cars.
Addressing the rise in auto-rickshaws, he noted that the previous government's decision to issue licenses has led to an oversupply, contributing to worsening traffic. He urged relevant authorities to take action in consultation with the government to tackle the issue.
