A class 8 student was allegedly stabbed by an autorickshaw driver in Betagi upazila of Barguna on Tuesday after she rejected his advances, according to police reports.
The victim has been identified as Trisha Akhtar, a student at Putiakhali Ideal High School in the upazila.
The accused, Hasan Sikdar, has been taken into police custody after being detained by local residents and handed over to authorities.
Mohammad Ekramul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Betagi police station, confirmed the incident and stated that a case has been filed against the accused.
According to locals, the accused, Hasan Sikdar, had repeatedly made romantic advances towards the girl, which she had turned down on several occasions.
On Tuesday, as she was headed home from school, the autorickshaw driver stood in her way and stabbed her for not accepting his proposal, they said.
Although the accused initially fled the scene, locals were able to apprehend him and subsequently handed him over to the police.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
