The body of Suman Mia, a college student who had been missing since November 4, was recovered on Tuesday morning following an excavation in the Sajobkhila area of Sherpur Sadar Upazila, according to police.
District Superintendent of Police Md Aminul Islam confirmed that the body was found in the yard of a police officer’s house, following an excavation late Monday.
So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
They are: Nazrul Islam, a resident of Bagrakosa in Sherpur city; his daughter Anni Aktar(19); and the police officer's son, Rabin Mia(20).
The arrested individuals are expected to be presented before a court on Tuesday.
Suman Mia, the deceased, was the son of farmer Md Nazrul Islam from Kosba Barakpara in Sherpur Sadar Upazila. He was an intermediate first-year student at Sherpur Government College.
According to the case details, Anni Aktar, a classmate of Suman, had attempted to start a romantic relationship with him, which he had rejected a few days prior to his disappearance.
On November 4, Anni, along with two to three other young men, abducted Suman while he was on his way home from college in Bagrakosa Kazibari Pukurpar, the case states.
Suman’s father filed a general diary with the Sadar police station following his son’s disappearance.
With the help of technological tools and intelligence gathering, law enforcement identified the involvement of the three arrested individuals in the abduction. They were subsequently detained.
During initial interrogations, the suspects admitted to the kidnapping, and based on their confessions, the body was recovered from the yard of the police officer’s house.
Superintendent of Police Aminul Islam further revealed that Suman’s last known location was traced to Mymensingh on Sunday, after which his mobile phone was turned off.
Md Jubaidul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station, confirmed that the body was sent to Sadar Hospital’s morgue for an autopsy.
Local sources indicated that Suman and Anni had been in a relationship, but it began to deteriorate when Anni’s family arranged her marriage to another man recently.
