Bashundhara Public School and College (BPSC) joyfully welcomed the Bengali New Year 1432 with vibrant celebrations, marking the first time students and guardians participated together since the institution began its academic journey.
The BPSC campus, located in Dhaka’s Bashundhara residential area, transformed into a hub of festivity on Monday as teachers, students, and parents came together in a spirited celebration of Pohela Boishakh, creating a colourful and memorable occasion.
In the morning, a lively procession was held with the participation of teachers and students. The procession began on the school premises, circled the road in front of the Bashundhara Kings Arena, and returned to the school.
Students in the procession carried colourful placards, festoons, and various Boishakhi-themed items. The traditional attire worn by teachers and students added a vibrant dimension to the celebration. The rhythmic beats of dhak-dhol and Boishakhi songs further enlivened the procession.
A Boishakhi Fair was inaugurated on the school grounds, featuring a variety of traditional folk games and entertainment for the students. Highlights included horse carts, a bioscope viewing station, and the Nagardola (giant wheel), which brought immense joy to the young boys and girls.
Additionally, several food stalls were set up at the fair, serving traditional Bengali dishes that reflected the rich culinary culture of the region.
"I feel very good today. I rode a horse cart and climbed the Nagardola. I’m having a lot of fun with my friends. I’m very happy to be at the Boishakhi Fair,” said Shaira Rownaf, a student of the school.
A parent, Rokaiya Islam, praised the initiative, saying, “My children are very happy. This kind of celebration helps the new generation learn about and take interest in our culture.”
Throughout the day-long Boishakhi festival, the school organised songs, dances, and poetry recitations. Students participated in various cultural programs to showcase their talents, while teachers also joined in performances and encouraged the young participants.
Speaking about the school’s first-ever Boishakh celebration, BPSC Principal Brig Gen (Retd) Md. Anisur Rahman said, “Students and teachers are participating in our Boishakhi cultural program. Students from our Bashundhara Special Children School are also taking part. We started the celebration with a joy rally featuring various elements of Bengali culture, followed by the fair’s inauguration.”
The principal emphasised that the fair was designed to help students understand, appreciate, and enjoy Bengali culture and traditions.
“We’ve tried to bring in the essence of Bengal — its music, its customs, and the songs we used to sing in the past. Through this, we aim to build a connection between the past and present generations,” he added.
