Netflix closed one of its AAA game studios before announcing or releasing the game, reports agencies.
Netflix confirmed the closure of the studio named “Blue”, the decision comes after the streaming giant began its foray into the gaming industry.
The studio was formed in 2022 under the leadership of a former executive producer for Overwatch, Chacko Sonny. The studio recruited a team of veterans in the industry, including developers with experience on major franchises like Halo and God of War, and was reportedly working on a multi-platform AAA game based on an original intellectual property (IP)
However, Blue was shut down before the game was officially announced or released.
Netflix has been building its gaming presence since 2021, initially focusing on mobile games. Though it started with a small handful of hyper-casual mobile games, Netflix’s offerings have expanded to include mobile exclusive ports of iconic games like Grand Theft Auto and Hades its own internally developed exclusives like Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals.
The company has been expanding its gaming business and development pipeline through acquisitions and new studio launches. The latest additions included a mobile game studio in Helsinki, a new studio in Southern California, and the acquisition of Spry Fox, the developer behind Cozy Grove.
However, the recent closure may puts Netflix's ambitions in producing AAA on hold.
