Sadarghat had almost lost its old charm. The once-busy river port had turned quiet over the years. But ahead of this year’s Eid-ul-Azha, the scene has changed completely.
Thousands of homebound people are once again crowding the terminal to return to their villages by launch, bringing life back to the country’s largest inland river port. Free from long traffic jams and offering a comparatively comfortable journey, launch travel has regained its appeal among Eid travellers.
Even after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, which significantly reduced passenger pressure at Sadarghat, the terminal is now witnessing a revival. The whistles of launches, the overflowing crowds and the rush of passengers all indicate that people’s love for river travel is still very much alive.
Despite the stormy weather of May, the terminal has taken on a festive atmosphere. With the Eid holidays approaching, streams of passengers have started pouring into Sadarghat. After years of relative silence, the river port has once again returned to its familiar busy look.
At the terminal, homebound passengers can be seen arriving with bags, luggage and family members, all preparing for the long journey to the southern districts. Some are rushing to ticket counters, while others are waiting patiently for their launches.
Passengers travelling to Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalakathi and Pirojpur are trying to secure seats on launches, while even short-route travellers heading to Munshiganj and Chandpur are adding to the crowd. Altogether, the terminal has turned into a gathering point for Eid travellers.
Many passengers said launch journeys are comparatively more peaceful and comfortable than road travel. They believe the chances of accidents are also lower. Some passengers said travelling by bus becomes difficult during Eid due to severe traffic congestion, making launches a preferred option.
However, authorities reminded passengers that caution remains important, as Sadarghat also witnessed a tragic accident during last year’s Eid-ul-Azha.
Due to the possibility of storms and rough weather, passengers have been advised to stay alert and follow weather forecasts and official instructions.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies and river transport authorities have strengthened security measures at the terminal to ensure safe travel for Eid passengers. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) said it is maintaining round-the-clock monitoring at the terminal.
