Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has said immediate action would be taken if specific complaints of overcharging fares during Eid travel are received.
He made the remarks on Tuesday morning while talking to journalists after visiting the capital’s Sayedabad bus terminal.
The minister said fare stickers had been displayed at every counter, while fare charts were also attached to buses. He said passengers are now able to travel home more smoothly and on time compared to previous years.
He added that mobile courts are also operating in the field. “If passengers file complaints mentioning the name of the transport service, immediate action will be taken,” he said.
The adviser said many passengers are suffering due to not purchasing advance tickets. In some cases, drivers or supervisors are also charging extra fares by taking advantage of passengers’ lack of awareness.
Referring to sacrificial cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Shaikh Rabiul Alam said discussions were held with the Local Government Ministry to ensure that cattle markets are not set up on roads.
However, due to the increasing pressure of cattle traders and buyers, markets often spread onto roads, creating coordination problems in some areas, he said.
The adviser also said the government has some limitations in monitoring the situation as a large number of people are travelling on goods-laden trucks.
“Trying to stop those trucks often creates traffic congestion on highways,” he said, adding that maintaining discipline on roads becomes difficult without public awareness.
