Traffic police members would get small firearms to prevent snatching incidents that have grown significantly across the capital, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Sazzat Ali announced Thursday, reports The Daily Sun.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police disclosed the development while inaugurating Dhaka’s counter-based public transportation service at Azampur kitchen market in the capital.
He noted incidents of snatching have risen across the city, but acknowledged the police have limited workforce. In this backdrop, traffic police will help expand the operational force against snatchers.
During snatching incidents on-duty traffic police personnel cannot intervene, but in the near-future they can face criminals with their small firearms, the DMP chief said.
He also reported that over the past two weeks snatching incidents have fallen due to a crackdown by law enforcers. Strengthened drives against criminals would continue, he noted.
