Ferry services on Aricha-Kazirhat and Paturia-Daulatdia river routes have been suspended since Saturday night due to dense fog, causing hundreds of vehicles stuck at four terminals, said authority on Sunday morning, reports UNB.
Nasir Chowdhury, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) in Aricha, said that the fog became intense around 10:30pm on Saturday, covering the entire waterway and obscuring the beacon lights of the ferries.
To avoid any unwanted accidents, the ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route were suspended, resulting in the stranded of 12 ferries at both terminals, he said.
Moreover, five ferries have been stranded at Aricha-Kazirhat terminals since 11:30pm caused by the thick fog, said the BIWTC official.
The suspensions halted more than 600 vehicles at the four terminals.
The stranded vehicles include freight trucks, night coaches, passenger buses, private cars, microbuses, and some pick-up vans carrying perishable goods.
Authorities have informed that ferry services cannot be resumed until the fog clears and conditions improve.
