Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said, "Shaheed Asad, who sacrificed his life in the 1969 Uprising, will remain memorable among the country's democracy-loving and freedom-seeking people."
He further said, "His sacrifice continues to inspire the new generation to take responsibility for the country and stand for the truth, as seen in the student-worker-people's Uprising in July-August. The martyr’s sacrifice will never be in vain."
Chief Adviser made these remarks in his message on the occasion of "Shaheed Asad Day" today (January 20).
He said, "Shaheed Asad Day is a highly significant day in the history of Bangladesh's liberation struggle."
"When the people of Bengal were bewildered by the discriminatory behavior, torture, and oppression of the Pakistani rulers, the struggle for the liberation of the Bengali people took on a new dimension, emerging as a movement against inequality and persecution, guiding the nation toward freedom," he said.
"On January 20, 1969, police opened fire on the ongoing student-people's procession on the road in front of Dhaka Medical College. In this incident, Mohammad Asaduzzaman Asad, a master's student at Dhaka University, was killed, and many others were injured. Shaheed Asad's sacrifice added a new dimension to the ongoing movement," he said.
People from all walks of life, advocating for self-determination, defied imprisonment and repression to take to the streets. The movement gradually escalated, ultimately culminating into a Mass Uprising, the Chief Adviser added.
He prayed for the peace of Shaheed Asad's soul and paid tribute to all the martyrs.
