The interim government has reaffirmed its determination to bring back all the stolen money.
In a statement from the press office of the Chief Adviser on Tuesday night (January 14), the government reaffirmed this pledge.
According to the statement, “We are pledged to accountability and justice, and we will work with others in order to bring back the stolen money and return it to the people of Bangladesh. ”
Highlighting that the majority of Bangladeshis demand justice in cases of money laundering, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has stated that it is essential to bring incidents of embezzlement of public funds and those involved in such activities under a full-fledged investigation.
He said, "If evidence of benefiting from embezzlement is found, we expect the assets to be returned to Bangladesh, where the people are the rightful owners."
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Dr Yunus mentioned Tulip Siddiq and said, “Perhaps she was not aware of the source of specific funds and properties in London.”
However, the Chief Adviser feels that Tulip now knows about it and she must apologize to the people of Bangladesh.
The statement further noted that the government is working with international law enforcement agencies to identify and recover stolen public funds. Such cooperation is critical to dismantling global economic crime networks.
The statement has also expressed hope and confidence that all friendly governments, including the UK, will stand by the people of Bangladesh to ensure justice for these crimes.
The investigation into the $5 billion corruption in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project has exposed the extent of corruption under the previous government. Misuse of public resources in such projects not only deprived the people of Bangladesh but also obstructed the country’s path to financial stability.
The statement highlighted that the theft of billions of dollars in public funds has placed Bangladesh in a significant financial deficit.
The statement further noted, "The stolen funds from Bangladesh belong to its people. To ensure justice, we will continue working with our international partners."
