Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Haque said holding national elections is the main responsibility of the government, not local government elections.
He said, “Holding local government council elections before or along with the national elections is not reasonable and realistic. The responsibility of the government is to organize the national elections for what the people of the country have been waiting for the last 16 years by completing reforms on the basis of consensus. Otherwise, various questions will arise about the government's motive. In that case, the neutrality of the government will also be questioned. Moreover, the main demand from the political parties and the people is to pave the way for the country's democratic journey by conducting free and fair elections.”
He said this on Thursday during an exchange of views with the central leaders of the Revolutionary Youth Solidarity. The exchange of views was held at the central office of the Revolutionary Workers Party in Segun Bagicha.
Saiful Haque said the main issue of the anti-fascist movement of the last 16 years was to ensure the people's right to vote and to ensure free, fair and credible national elections. The government has no room to deviate from this main duty.
He expressed hope that the National Consensus Commission will discharge its duties with efficiency and competence and will be able to build a national consensus on important issues of transformation.
The meeting was attended by Revolutionary Workers Party Political Council member Bannishikha Jamali, Revolutionary Youth Solidarity convener Babar Chowdhury, member secretary Mir Rezaul Alam, Jamilur Rahman Dalim, Ariful Islam, Ratan Mohant, Mohammad Real, among others.
