Chattogram city police recovered nine sacks of missing case documents in the early hours Thursday, and arrested a tea seller in connection with the sensational theft.
However, police did not disclose the name or affiliation of the arrestee due to the sensitivity of the incident, and told reporters that raids are continuing.
The port city’s Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim confirmed recovering nine sacks containing documents related to around 1,911 cases filed in Chattogram.
On January 5, Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Court’s PP Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan filed a general diary (GD) with the police station, seeking urgent recovery of the missing files.
According to the GD, the documents were placed in front of the public prosecutor’s office on April 24, 2023, due to insufficient space inside. The court went on full vacation starting December 12, suggesting the documents were likely stolen between 13-31 December.
