Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Showkat Ali announced on Sunday that punitive action has been taken against 71 students involved in the murder of martyr Abu Sayed.
He stated that the Begum Rokeya University Central Students' Union (BRUCSU) elections would be held before any other elections at the university, reports BSS.
Until further orders, all types of elections for the teachers', officers', and employees' associations or unions at Begum Rokeya University will remain suspended.
Professor Ali added that various decisions had been made following discussions with leaders of the teachers', officers', and employees' organizations on Saturday night.
The vice-chancellor shared this information while briefing journalists after the 109th syndicate meeting of the university, which was held at the administrative building in Rangpur on Sunday.
He explained that 71 students involved in opposing and attacking the July revolution student movement had been punished for various terms based on the disciplinary committee's recommendations.
"Of these, legal action has been taken against 15 students whose studentships have ended, 33 have been expelled for two semesters, and 23 have been expelled for one semester," he stated.
In addition, nine teachers, officials, and employees involved in the same incident, along with the former proctor arrested by the police, have already been suspended.
"Further action will be taken against them as per the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, for failing to respond to the show cause letter," the vice-chancellor added.
Professor Ali also mentioned that the constitution for the BRUCSU elections had been approved at the syndicate meeting.
"In line with the approved constitution, a roadmap for the BRUCSU and various hall union elections will be announced after discussions with various stakeholders, including students," he said.
He further emphasized that the administration is always vigilant to ensure no untoward incidents occur on the campus of martyr Abu Sayed's university.
"As per the decision of the previous syndicate meeting, student politics will remain suspended on the campus until further notice," he declared.
Professor Ali presided over the university’s 109th syndicate meeting, which was also attended by other members.
