The press secretary of the Chief Advisor, Shafiqul Alam, said, ‘If the interim government leaves without repairing the state at all, this generation will make accused.’
He said this at a seminar titled ‘State Reform Proposals’ organized by the National Democratic Movement (NDM) at the BRAC Center in Mohakhali on Saturday.
Shafiqul Alam said, ‘The reform commissions will submit their reports on December 31. After that, we all will discuss together.’
The press secretary of the Chief Advisor said, “Currently, such an expectation has been created in Bangladesh, against which our history is completely opposite. If we review our history, we can see that after 1971, we have been engaged in the politics of decline for a whole decade. Very serious discussions have not taken place in this country. In short, if you look at the entire 70s, it can be seen that it was just a decade of killings. That was the politics of decline. There was no talk of any political reform at that time. In the next decade, Ziaur Rahman created a kind of reform or discipline. His plan was different, but he created the institutions that modern Bangladesh see in present time.”
“After that, we have also made the caretaker government system that had become controversial within 15 years. Whenever everyone thought that it needs to be reformed, (in 1996) Sheikh Hasina came to power and put it in the grave. Later, if you look at 2007-08, you can see that the military government at that time was brutal. People were taken away and various information was extracted through torture. Then they were extracted in the form of CDs and given to the media for dissemination. If you look at the two years of that rule, you can see that their only achievement was the separation of the judiciary from the executive. Apart from that, there was nothing else,” he continued.
He said there are many talks about reforms. Various discussions among different people, various seminars are being held. That is, there is a debate among everyone about reforms on a large scale. And that's what we wanted, that there should be a massive debate among everyone about reforms. Every person and party in Bangladesh should participate in this debate so that what kind of Bangladesh we want can be decided through discussion. And this is what America did around 1700 to 1800. They are getting the benefits of it after 250 years.
