The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, the world’s only fully accredited teaching and surgical hospital onboard an aircraft, arrived in Bangladesh for its 11th mission to provide ophthalmic training.
The MD-10 aircraft landed at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport at 12:20 pm on Thursday.
Orbis International Country Director Dr Munir Ahmed, Airport Director Group Captain Shaikh Abdullah Alamgir, and CEITC’s Prof Dr Munirujzaman Osmani welcomed the crew.
This visit marks Orbis’s 11th training programme in Bangladesh since 1985. From November 17–28, Orbis staff and volunteer specialists will deliver hands-on surgical training to Bangladeshi eye care professionals. The programme will feature simulation exercises and ophthalmic workshops at both the airport and Orbis’s partner hospital, CEITC.
Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the programme is supported by sponsors including the Alcon Foundation, FedEx, Alcon Cares, the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB), and the National Eye Care (NEC).
The training will focus on subspecialties such as cataracts, oculoplastics, paediatric glaucoma, cornea, and include instruction in anaesthesiology, nursing, and biomedical engineering.
“We are honoured to bring the Flying Eye Hospital back to Bangladesh in partnership with the Ministry of Health and CEITC,” said Dr Munir Ahmed.
“Our long-term partnerships are vital to improving access to quality eye care in Bangladesh.”
Orbis International, a nonprofit organisation, delivers sight-saving programmes in over 200 countries and territories worldwide.
