A high-level delegation is scheduled to visit the US next week to discuss US President Donald Trump's counter-tariffs, said commerce adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin.
He said this at a BSRF view-exchange meeting titled 'US's 37 percent tariff: Challenges, prospects and government's actions' organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat's media centre on Wednesday afternoon.
The commerce adviser said, “This delegation will include our finance adviser, special assistant to the chief adviser and the commerce secretary, along with other relevant people. They will discuss with the USTR, who work on US tariffs, and identify some specific steps on tariffs and non-tariffs.
The exchange of views was chaired by BSRF general secretary Masudul Haque and BSRF president Fasih Uddin Mahtab.
He said, "We know that this counter-tariff has been suspended for 90 days. What will our activities be during this time? The Chief Advisor himself is aware of this. The United States is one of the countries with which we have trade, especially exports are high, and imports are low. They are our single largest buyer. That is why the issue is of concern to us. When the United States is calculating its trade deficit, it is doing it in terms of goods, not services. For this, we have prepared some work packages.”
“A delegation including our special assistant to the chief adviser, the finance adviser and the commerce secretary are going to the United States next week with this work package, where they will discuss with the USTR, who work on these tariffs, some tariff and non-tariff structures, through which we will identify some more specific steps,” he said.
