A Dhaka court has granted police remand for four prominent figures in separate criminal cases.
Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has been placed on a three-day remand in a murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. Former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the same station, Abul Hossain, was granted a five-day remand in the same case.
In separate developments, the court approved a three-day remand for former Bhola-4 lawmaker Abdullah Al Islam Jacob in a case under Bhatara Police Station, and a five-day remand for former Jhenaidah-3 lawmaker Nabi Nawaz (59) in a murder case filed with Ramna Police Station.
The remand orders were issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman, following hearings from both the prosecution and defence. The accused were produced before the court at 10:00 am that day. Police sought a five-day remand for Mamun and Abul Hossain in the Jatrabari case, seven days for Jacob in the Bhatara case, and seven days for Nabi Nawaz in the Ramna case. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the remand requests, while defence lawyers applied for their cancellation. After hearing both sides, the court granted the respective remand periods.
According to court sources, all the remand orders are linked to cases originating from incidents surrounding the anti-discrimination student movement, which has resulted in a series of arrests and ongoing investigations.
Former IGP Mamun was arrested by police from Uttara on September 4. Former MP Jacob was arrested in Gulshan on October 1. Nabi Nawaz was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) on April 11 from Dhaka. Meanwhile, ex-OC Abul Hossain was arrested on September 16 from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.
