Farida Yasmin of the Dainik Ittefaq and Shyamal Dutta of Dainik Bhorer Kagoj of the pro-liberation journalists forum have been elected president and general secretary (GS) of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) respectively for the next two years, reports BSS.
Farida was elected president defeating her rival Kamal Uddin Sabuj while Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta was elected general secretary beating his rival Elias Khan, according to results announced here on Saturday evening.
Farida Yasmin bagged 567 votes while her rival candidate Kamal Uddin Sabuj 401 votes. Farida was the president of the outgoing committee, too.
Meanwhile, Shyamal Dutta secured 496 votes while Ilias Khan got 474 votes for the general secretary post.
Hasan Hafiz was elected senior vice president (559) and Rezwanul Haque Raza (583) vice president.
The other office bearers of the 17-member JPC executive committee are: Joint Secretaries Ayub Bhuiyan, (540) and M Ashraf Ali (491), and Treasurer Shahed Chowdhury (576).
The 10 members are Farid Hossain (495), Kazi Rawnak Hossain (422), Shahnaj Siddiqui Shoma (390), Kallyan Saha (382), Shahnaz Begum Poly (360), Syed Abdal Ahmad (347), Julhas Alam (345), Bakhriar Rana (330), Mohammad Momin Hossain (330) and Simanta Khokon (289).
Voting in the Jatiya Press Club election was held from 9:00am to 5:00pm without any break where 985 voters out of 1,100 exercised their franchise.
Chief election commissioner of JPC election Mostafa-e-Jamil announced the results at around 8pm Saturday.
