Billionaire Elon Musk's electric vehicle (EV) company, Tesla Inc., is hiring in India, signaling its plans to enter the market, according to a Bloomberg report.
This follows a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Musk, and former President Donald Trump last week in the US.
Tesla is currently seeking candidates for 13 positions, including customer-facing and back-end roles, as listed on LinkedIn. Available positions include Tesla advisor, inside sales advisor, customer support specialist, consumer engagement manager, order operations specialist, service manager, business operations analyst, store manager, parts advisor, service advisor, delivery operations specialist, and customer support supervisor.
At least five of these positions, such as service technician and advisory roles, are available in both Mumbai and Delhi, while others, including the customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, are specific to Mumbai.
Tesla had previously avoided India due to high import duties, despite intermittent interest over the years. However, India recently reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110 percent to 70 percent.
While India's EV market is still in its early stages compared to China, which saw 11 million electric cars sold last year, India could be a potential growth market for Tesla amid its slowing sales, which saw a drop for the first time in over a decade.
The moves also highlight the intersection of Musk's business and political interests. For instance, Italy recently confirmed talks with Musk's SpaceX to provide secure satellite-based communications for its government, following a meeting between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and former President-elect Trump in Florida.
