In Sri Lanka, an average of four elephants die each month from electrocution, with around 50 deaths attributed to unauthorized connections to the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) power supply in 2024, the CEB reported.
The CEB has taken steps to address the illegal connections and is calling on the public to help protect the country’s wild elephant population.
“If you have information about unauthorized connections to fences or wires, please contact the CEB at 0112 118 767 or our hotline at 1987,” the CEB said. “We invite you to help preserve this vital resource, which holds religious and cultural significance, draws local and foreign tourists, and plays an important role in the country's economy.”
