On February 27, 2025, President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially inaugurated the Pegadaian Gold Bank Service and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI). The event marks a significant development for Pegadaian, a subsidiary of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), and part of the Ultra Micro Holding group, which also includes Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM). The inauguration ceremony was symbolized by President Prabowo placing a gold bar into a treasure box, said a press release.
The establishment of the Gold Bank is seen as a major step toward strengthening Indonesia’s economy. President Prabowo expressed his optimism, stating that the new initiative could contribute around IDR 245 trillion to the national GDP, create 1.8 million new jobs, bolster foreign exchange reserves, and reduce foreign exchange outflows.
The ceremony was attended by several government and industry leaders, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo.
In his remarks, Minister Erick Thohir emphasized that the Bullion Bank aims to unlock access to the 1,800 tons of gold owned by the public. BRI President Director Sunarso affirmed BRI's commitment to the success of the Gold Bank, noting that as the parent of Ultra Micro Holding, BRI is fully invested in supporting the initiative.
Pegadaian President Director Damar Latri Setiawan also shared his optimism, stating that the Gold Bank initiative aligns with Pegadaian’s role in supporting Indonesia’s economic growth and the Asta Cita vision.
As of 2024, Pegadaian managed 90 tons of gold, with sales reaching 9 tons, a 35% increase from the previous year. Additionally, BRI's Gold Investment feature on the BRImo app, launched in February 2024, recorded a transaction volume of IDR 279.8 billion by December.
Through the Pegadaian Gold Bank, BRI Group is confident it will contribute significantly to Indonesia’s economic acceleration by providing broader access to gold investment opportunities.
